Releasing Shame About Red Flags You Missed in an Abusive Relationship

emotionalhealth Aug 25, 2026

"How did I not see it?"

If that question has been on repeat, you're far from alone — it's one of the most common things survivors carry after leaving a narcissistic relationship. It's also one of the most misunderstood. The truth is, missing red flags isn't usually about being naive or careless. It's often about doing exactly what felt necessary at the time: minimizing, explaining away, hoping, adapting. That's not a character flaw. That's survival.

This meditation doesn't try to answer the "how did I not see it" question, because the honest answer isn't a tidy one — it's layered, personal, and shaped by everything you'd already learned about love and safety before this relationship even started. What this meditation offers instead is somewhere to put the shame down. Not the awareness (you get to keep that — it's useful now), just the self-blame that's been sitting on top of it.

You were doing the best you could with what you knew and what you'd survived before. That's worth remembering, especially on the days hindsight feels like an accusation instead of a lesson.
